Meet Megan
Hi! My name is Megan Harmon- I am the owner and operator of MH Performance Horsemanship.
I have been riding and working with horses for 24 years. I took the plunge and started MHPH in 2020 and I am currently working in the southern Maine area helping people in all disciplines with their horses. I believe that good horsemanship at its core should not change based on what kind of tack you're siting in. The fundamentals should be the same from ranch riding to dressage to jumping. I focus on helping create a solid foundation for your horse that will allow them to be versatile and set them up for success in any job.
I grew up riding at a lesson/ show barn and worked in exchange for lessons and saddle time. I spent 10 years showing AQHA, and as I got older I realized that there had to be more to training then what I saw in the show world. I didn't like a lot of the methods I had seen used and knew there had to be a better way to get a horse "show ready."
I spent some time working for an equine rescue and experimented with methods from various horseman, finding what work and what didn't for different types of horses. I found my own approach, which focuses on the horses mental well being and giving them choices in training. This creates a more relaxed and willing partner because once they know we are listening to them relaxation comes far more easily. If the horse isn't relaxed they don't learn as well.
Ive been applying my practices the last five years and have helped many people and their horses, from those that just want to trail ride to those who want to show. I have also had the pleasure of really seeing the long term effects of my program with my AQHA gelding Dually as he has really blossomed into an amazing horse and partner. It's an amazing feeling working with a horse that is truly communicating with you and is willing to try hard for you because they know if they need help you will be there for them.
My goal is to create happy horses that have the tools to succeed in any environment.
